Christine Murphy and I have collaborated to develop individual bodies of work to be shown as one exhibition titled Synergy- Pattern and Patina. We both share an appreciation for minimalist philosophy and after discussing this idea we agreed to adopt a reduced palette in each of our work to ensure that the simplicity of the forms in my paintings and Christine’s pots directed the exhibition outcome.
This new body of work continues my interest in the division of space within a given compositional structure. Adopting a very minimal approach to shape, form and colour, the work does not pretend to be anything other than order, simplicity and harmony. The colour palette is reduced to a series of dark tones which empowers the work and allows for a concentrated approach to ensure these elements, repetition, tone, shape, pattern, form, etc are the primary reason for creating.
This body of work responds to the ceramic pieces created by Christine Murphy. Her use of simple form, clean line and shapes and her minimal use of coloured glazing has inspired my approach. I believe that even though we are working in two opposing formats; mine in two dimensions and Christine working in three dimensional format, that has created an interesting dynamism and tension between the works exhibited.
Exhibition was held at the Canberra Potter Society Gallery, Watson ACT September 2023
